Research Project: Pest Management Strategies for Flour Mills

Location: Stored Product Insect and Engineering Research

Project Number: 3020-43000-034-051-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2024
End Date: May 31, 2027

Objective:
The objective of this research is to determine efficacy of chlorine dioxide fumigations and residual insecticide in flour mills to reduce pathogen loads and infestation by stored product insects.

Approach:
Firstly, the efficacy of chlorine dioxide solution for controlling pathogens on wheat kernels will be investigated during wheat tempering process. Secondly, residual insecticides including esfenvalerate, pyriproxyfen, deltamethrin, and beta-cyfluthrin will be sprayed to the concrete floor of the flour mill and the efficacy of controlling insect infestation will be determined by direct (bioassay) and indirect (pheromone traps) sampling before and after application of fumigation and residual insecticides.
