Research Project: OPBEANS SREP: Protein-rich wholesome Popping Beans to Enhance Agricultural Production, Nutrition and Sustainability

Location: Sugarbeet and Bean Research

Project Number: 5050-21430-012-019-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2024
End Date: Aug 31, 2025

Objective:
Develop new bean cultivars based on the popping trait and with other improved qualities/traits, and identify genes responsible for the popping and other important traits in these cultivars.

Approach:
Initial crosses involving select bean cultivars with several nuña bean landraces will be made. Recombinant inbred populations will be developed and a diversity panel will be assembled. Populations will be genotyped via genotype by sequencing and phenotyped for popping ability and food functionality traits (oligosaccharides and lectins). Quality Trail Loci analysis will be conducted. Breeding of popping beans for adaptation and popping ability will be conducted.
