Research Project: Genetic Improvement of Stone Fruit Rootstocks for the Southeastern United States

Location: Fruit and Tree Nut Research

Project Number: 6042-21000-006-004-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2024
End Date: Sep 30, 2027

Objective:
1. To harness long-term, high-resolution climate data for analyzing past and future climate conditions affecting major peach production areas or states (e.g .,California and Georgia). 2. To employ advanced statistical models and machine learning algorithms to evaluate the impacts of climate change on peach production and cultivars and identify potential vulnerabilities to extreme weather conditions . 3. To create a targeted climate adaptation framework for the peach industry, ensuring its sustainability and productivity in the face of climate change.

Approach:
We will conduct the statistical modeling based on long-term, high-resolution climate datasets and peach data including phenological data. We are planning to further analyze the extr eme weather events using machine learning approaches. The results will be e valuated in terms of observational peach production and variations.
