Research Project: Nitrous Oxide Emissions from Agricultural Lands in Missouri

Location: Cropping Systems and Water Quality Research

Project Number: 5070-12000-001-020-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 15, 2024
End Date: Mar 1, 2029

Objective:
Conduct cooperative research to quantify nitrous oxide emissions from agricultural lands in Missouri. Additionally, quantify the impact of agricultural practices on nitrous oxide emissions to provide information to Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).

Approach:
Measurements of nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide (hereafter greenhouse gas – GHG) fluxes will be obtained from chambers installed at Long-Term Agroecosystem Research (LTAR) field sites. Measurements will be obtained on a weekly basis starting in October 2024 and data collection will continue through the duration of the project. GHG chambers will be installed in the LTAR ‘large plots’ located near Centralia, Missouri, where multiple cropping systems and agricultural practices are maintained by the USDA-ARS. Data will be processed using established procedures and standard data products will be developed for analysis. Differences between cropping practices and over time will be interpreted with respect to field conditions and environmental variables, including those collected from weather stations maintained in the project. The cooperator will participate in all phases of the project and will lead instrumentation maintenance, calibration, and data collection.
