Research Project: Yield Limitations of Soybean Varieties Under Drought: Identifying and Overcoming Weaknesses by Team Drought

Location: Soybean and Nitrogen Fixation Research

Project Number: 6070-21220-070-079-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2024
End Date: Sep 30, 2025

Objective:
Objective: 2a). Gene discovery and genetic marker development: a) Identify and incorporate newly discovered drought tolerance genes (slow wilting and beneficial root traits) into high-yielding backgrounds. Objective: 3). Improve drought screening and selection.

Approach:
2a). The most promising exotic plant introduction will be confirmed for yield index under drought stress and provided as drought breeding stock. DNA markers will be developed for the newly identified slow-wilting and root length loci from our GWAS experiments. Develop new gene mapping population for root traits with collaboration with Lin group at MU. Continue backcrossing of 2 slow wilting gene and 1 root length gene to develop drought tolerant germplasm lines in MG II to IV. 3). Develop a new root phenotyping platform (rhizo-slide) in the greenhouse to mimic field conditions to better translation of root trait from greenhouse to real field cultivation.
