Objective:
Ornamental crop producers are proximal to large urban populations and are highly visible and can be seen as polluters and excessive water users. This project will study the concentration of Emerging environmental contaminants [EECs, e.g., perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), heavy metals, trace elements, harmful algal blooms (microcystin), and micro- and nano-plastics] present localized growing areas.
Approach:
Cooperator will travel to two separate operations to collect water samples from source water used for irrigation, production runoff from localized growing areas, and reservoir storage from December 2024 to August 2025. Samples will be collected in Dec, Feb, April, June, and August at each location. They will analyze water quality samples for total suspended solids and provide electrochemical and temperature water quality data.
