Research Project: Genetic Enhancement and Management of Warm-Season Species for Forage, Turf and Renewable Energy

Location: National Peanut Research Laboratory

Project Number: 6044-21600-001-001-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 15, 2017
End Date: Jul 14, 2024

Objective:
Develop integrated tillage, fertility, and crop rotation management production practices for sustainable Brassica carinata production across the southeast USA. Oil from carinata seed will be crushed for oil which will be used for production of aviation and other fuels, as well as other uses such as animal feed.

Approach:
The effects of previous summer crops on carinata production as well as the effects of carinata production on subsequent summer crops will be determined. Genotype, environment, production practice interactions will be determined through a series of field tests that look at a small number of high producing genotypes, varying levels of N, P, and K with different tillage practices in replicated field experiments.
