Research Project: Alternatives to Antibiotics: Neonatal Immunomodulation to Improve Disease Resistance in Animals

Location: Food Safety and Enteric Pathogens Research

Project Number: 5030-32000-225-011-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2020
End Date: Feb 28, 2025

Objective:
The goal of the proposed collaboration is to evaluate the utility of BCG components to induce innate training and their potential to be used as an alternative to BCG as a non-antibiotic immunomodulator.

Approach:
Various components of an attenuated vaccine, BCG, will be isolated and tested in vitro to determine their capacity to induce innate training and their potential to be used as an alternative to BCG as a non-antibiotic immunomodulator. Their efficacy as immunomodulators will be evaluated in nursery piglets and neonatal calves. In addition, cells from piglets and calves will be ‘trained’ in vitro and the molecular mechanisms of innate memory will be assessed using ATAC-Seq, ChIP-seq, miRNA-seq and RNA-seq analysis.
