Research Project: Accelerating Genetic Gains in Maize and Wheat for Improved Livelihoods

Location: Cereal Disease Lab

Project Number: 5062-21220-025-014-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2020
End Date: Apr 30, 2024

Objective:
Continue global surveillance and monitoring of increasing and rapidly evolving transboundary rust pathogen threats, with a focus on stem and yellow rust.

Approach:
At least 300 stem rust D (dead) samples from 5-10 countries in Africa and Asia will be analyzed using ARS core SNP assays per year (first year 100 D samples),and data will be made available in the global wheat rust toolbox; 2. Ten to fifteen stem rust isolates (with quality phenotype data) will be sequenced per year (5-10 in year 1), and data will be deposited in GenBank or similar public repository. GenBank accession numbers will be linked to the global wheat rust toolbox; 3. Stem rust gene or molecular markers associated with such genes will be postulated, the type of resistance (APR or major) determined, and the data for at least 200 cultivars/advanced lines per year (50 advanced lines in year 1) will be made available in an Excellence in Breeding platform which is under development.
