Research Project: Testing and Development of Competitive High Quality Upland Cotton through Enhanced Ginning/Textile Processing Performance

Location: Cotton Ginning Research

Project Number: 3050-41000-010-066-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 15, 2019
End Date: Jul 14, 2024

Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research project is to evaluate new strains of Upland cotton including long-staple Acala 1517 for their ginnability and textile quality as means for guiding variety development. In addition to fiber length, strength and micronaire, other properties such as seed size, seedcoat fragments, neps, short fiber content and fiber uniformity will be evaluated in the breeding process.

Approach:
Commercial cultivars and new breeding lines will be evaluated for fiber quality, seed size and seedcoat fragment susceptibility; ginnability; and spinning utility. The project will be conducted by evaluating the following areas: 1) varietal interactions with mechanical processing both in the gin and the textile mill on fiber, yarn and fabric quality, and processing efficiency; 2) integrate genetic and genomic tools in the breeding process to incorporate useful traits and genes for ginnability and textile quality; and 3) process and evaluate in the gin and textile mill new upland cotton strains in reference to areas 1 and 2 in order to aid in cotton breeder variety selection and development. The cooperator is a faculty member in the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, New Mexico State University.
