Research Project: Fusarium Head Blight Risk Assessment, Management, and Education

Location: National Programs

Project Number: 0500-00053-004-095-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 13, 2020
End Date: May 12, 2023

Objective:
The objectives of this research are: 1) to provide upgrades to the current FHB risk assessment tool, dissemenate FHB alerts and web information relating to the models, 2) improve current models for the FHB risk assessment tool using different approches and improved observations, 3) test new fungicides available to wheat and barley growers and develop best management protocols, 4) evaluate current fungicides for efficacy on FHB in wheat and barley and 5) educate growers on best management practices for producing high quality wheat and barley in Ohio.

Approach:
The researcher will test and launch the upgraded FHB alert system provided for growers through the USWBSI. Future improvements will be based on grower feedback from a distributed survey. Fungicide trials will be conducted in Ohio to determine the best management strategies for wheat and barley growers in this region. Growers will be educated on the best methods for producing high quality malting barley and wheat at field days, workshops, meetings, newsletters and other media outlets.
