Research Project: Breeding Informatics to Benefit Agriculture

Location: Genomics and Bioinformatics Research

Project Number: 6066-21310-006-006-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2019
End Date: Aug 31, 2024

Objective:
Perform bioinformatics analyses and develop bioinformatics software focused on improving breeding tools. Data analysis will focus on next-generation sequence analysis with a focus on agriculturally important animal and crop systems in the southeast area, including polyploids such as peanut. The project will focus on improving breeding tools and references. Analysis and identification of quantitative trait locus (QTL) and candidate gene loci are expected to be additional objectives of this project.

Approach:
Investigator and Cooperator will work together to enhance breeding tools and references for animal and crop systems to address the objective above: 1. Develop and utilize next-generation sequencing platforms to investigate biologically relevant questions. 2. Develop amplicon and/or other genotyping based platform for cost-effective genotyping. 3. Develop and utilize variant discovery software. 4. Perform bioinformatic analyses to investigate ribonucleic acid (RNA)-sequencing, genome assembly, and genetic analyses. 5. Publication and dissemination of research products to reference journals and databases.
