Research Project: Improving Production and Resource Use Efficiency in Commercial Poultry Production

Location: Poultry Research

Project Number: 6064-32630-010-001-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 31, 2019
End Date: Jul 30, 2024

Objective:
1. Develop analysis framework for severe weather event data to evaluate extreme weather event frequency and impact on housing design requirements for U.S. broiler producing regions. 2. Conduct research on broiler house environmental control strategies for energy and water conservation.

Approach:
Historical event metadata/geometries associated with NWS severe weather alerts (warnings, watches, and advisories) for tornado, wind, lightning, and thunderstorm activity in areas of significant broiler production will be retrieved from public databases and commercial vendors. Geographic regions of interest for this analysis will be determined from locations of processing plants, as broiler houses are typically located within a 100 km (60 mile) radius of the plant to minimize transport time. All processing plant locations with a capacity of at least 500,000 head/week in the 20 states that comprise 99% of domestic production (AL, AR, DE, FL, GA, KY, LA, MD, MO, MS, NC, OH, OK, PA, SC, TN, TX, VA, and WV) will be used as focal points to define areas of interest for this analysis.
