Research Project: Silvopasture Research and Demonstration at the US Dairy Forage Research Center

Location: Dairy Forage Research

Project Number: 5090-21500-002-003-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Feb 1, 2020
End Date: Feb 1, 2025

Objective:
The objective of this research and demonstration project is to evaluate establishment methods and long-term performance of silvopasture as a management system for effectively improving degraded or underutilized natural lands within the context of an integrated crop-livestock system.

Approach:
The project will have 2 phases, establishment and maintenance, with associated research questions. In the establishment phase, we will compare the economic and ecological outcomes using conventional (low intensity vs high intensity) and organic (low intensity vs high intensity) approaches for clearing degraded shrubland and establishing silvopasture. During the maintenance phase, we will compare the persistence and productivity of high and low diversity pasture mixes in a management intensive rotational grazing silvopasture management system. During all phases of the project, producer input will be solicited and integral to the design and management of the project.
