Research Project: Genebank Genetic Diversity Management with Respect to Climate Change and Physiological Stress

Location: Vegetable Crops Research

Project Number: 5090-21000-072-003-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 1, 2020
End Date: May 31, 2024

Objective:
This project will combine physiological and molecular markers to 1) enhance genetic diversity management in the genebank stocks, 2) prioritize collection and study of natural populations most threatened by climate change, and 3) test and deploy benefit and technology sharing with Peru and other donor countries.

Approach:
1) Conduct DNA marker analysis to partition genetics of model species in series LON, S. okadae, and jamesii then test associations with physiological stresses and other phenotypic traits and make core collections, 2) Model expected climate change in the southwest USA to identify potato collection sites most threatened, sample and genetically characterize populations, and 3) Test existing genebank stocks, custom hybrids and new collections in Peru for cold and drought, and emerging biotic challenges promoted by climate change.
