Research Project: Evaluation of Toxicities of Methyl Benzoate and Analogs as Green Pesticide to Control Agricultural Insect Pests

Location: Invasive Insect Biocontrol & Behavior Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-22000-315-009-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: May 20, 2020
End Date: Aug 31, 2024

Objective:
1. Test MB and its analog blends for toxicity (flask bioassay) and repellency (cup bioassay) against SWD to limit the number of compounds that proceed to the next stage. 2. Conduct electrophysiological laboratory assays of selected compounds to understand repellency, and other mode of action. 3. Conduct the Lab and semi-field/field testing of suitable blends that have promising activities (either toxicity or repellency) against SWD and other agricultural important insect pests.

Approach:
ARS will provide all chemicals, laboratory colony of Spotted-wing drosophila, a GC-EAD Recording system, different bioassay devices and guidance for behavior evaluation of potential compounds. Cooperator will use ARS facility and conduct the lab bioassays/field tests to evaluate the activities of the candidate compounds.
