Research Project: Maintaining and Refining Animal GRIN

Location: Agricultural Genetic Resources Preservation Research

Project Number: 3012-31000-007-013-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2020
End Date: Jul 31, 2025

Objective:
To upgrade and maintain the Animal-GRIN database for national and international utilization.

Approach:
The Animal-GRIN information system is utilized on a daily basis by ARS and the livestock community. It reports the status of the National Animal Germplasm Program germplasm and tissue collection and associated information on phenotypes, genotypes, pedigrees, and geographic origin. In addition, it provides users with a mechanism for requesting samples or genetic information from ARS. The Animal-GRIN information system uses a wide range of software for the database and to make information publically available via the internet. The sotware development tools are constantly being updated and modified by the manufacturer, as a result there is a continual need for Animal-GRIN to be updated. In addition, new features will be added to the program based upon input from the user community. Two high priority development items are: increased geographic information system capacities, and effecent handling of large scale genomic data.
