Research Project: Testing Alfalfa Leaf Protein Concentrate in Aquafeeds to Enhance Finfish Production and Water Quality

Location: Plant Science Research

Project Number: 5062-21500-001-005-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: May 1, 2020
End Date: Jul 31, 2024

Objective:
Objective 1: Evaluate the potential of alfalfa protein concentrate (APC) as an ingredient in feed production for rainbow trout. Objective 2: Evaluate the effect of alfalfa protein concentrate with plant defensin and phytase for improving fish performance and water quality.

Approach:
For objective 1, four levels of commercially-available alfalfa protein concentrate (APC) will be used in formulating pelleted feed for rainbow trout. Feeding studies will be done to determine palatability, digestibility, feed-intake, feed conversion, growth, and proximate composition. Pellet physical properties including water stability, durability, bulk density, and oil absorption will be measured. For objective 2, defensin and phytase protein will be incorporated into feed. Feeding studies will be done for 60 days to measure growth performance, feed conversion ratio, nutrient retention, water quality, nutrient digestibility, and nutritional composition of fish.
