Location: Agroclimate and Hydraulics Research Unit
Project Number: 3070-13000-015-021-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Jun 1, 2020
End Date: May 31, 2025
Objective:
The Southern Plains (SP) Long-term Agroecosystem Research (LTAR) site seeks to develop crop and forage-based beef production systems that are flexible and sustainable in a highly variable climate, promote environmental stewardship, and preserve and enhance profitability. The objectives of this cooperative research project will assist the SP LTAR team through development of a stakeholder group, assistance in collecting field data to support research activities in crop production, livestock and forage management, and natural resources, while providing students exposure agricultural science and research.
Approach:
New resilient systems-based crop, livestock-forage beef cattle, and forage production research approaches will be envisioned and jointly evaluated in laboratory and field research. Stakeholder groups will be developed and used to help identify and guide the SP LTAR research program. Cooperator will assist in identifying persons suitable to develop and facilitate stakeholder groups, identify suitable enrolled students for work and educational opportunities at the ARS facilities. ARS will hire identified and interested students to gain work experience and be exposed to practical science and agricultural research.
