Objective:
Develop genomic tools for Puccinia graminis and associated rust fungi infecting Berberis and Mahonia; Develop molecular tools for genotyping and detection.

Approach:
Selected isolates and samples of P. graminis species complex and rust fungi infecting the alternate hosts of P. graminis (Berberis and Mahonia) will be sequenced. Sequence data will be mined for allelic variation of selected genes, as well as, genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Comparative genomics will be used to identify gene alleles and SNPs that will be used to develop diagnostic assays.
