Location: Genetic Improvement for Fruits & Vegetables Laboratory
Project Number: 8042-21000-023-005-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Oct 1, 2019
End Date: Aug 31, 2025
Objective:
Objective 1. Establish genomic resources to enable effective association mapping studies in blueberry and cranberry.
Objective 2. Discover DNA markers and fruit characteristics that maximize industry profitability and consumer preferences in blueberry and cranberry.
Objective 3. Deliver molecular and genetic resources to improve blueberry and cranberry fruit quality traits that maximize industry profitability and consumers’ preferences.
Objective 4. Assess the potential socio-economic impact of blueberry and cranberry fruit quality improvements on market demand.
Objective 5. Engage U.S. Vaccinium breeders, and stakeholder groups to transfer advanced phenomics and genomics tools to build a more efficient cultivar development system.
Approach:
Objective 1. Leverage our existing cranberry reference genome and resequencing of selected genotypes to create the cranberry pan genome.
Objective 2. A SNP array will be generated, based on the pan genome developed in Obj.1. The SNP array will be used for QTL analyses to map traits of interest.
Objective 3. The resources developed in Obj. 1-2 will be made available through a Vaccinium genomics website.
Objective 4. Through webinars, meetings and publications, the outcome of this meeting will be delivered to the breeding community and low cost markers, such as KASP, will be introduced that breeders can utilize.
