Research Project: Modernizing Cotton and Other Crop Breeding Systems by Integrating Genomic Analyses

Location: Genomics and Bioinformatics Research

Project Number: 6066-21310-006-009-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2020
End Date: Aug 29, 2024

Objective:
The project will focus on improving population level breeding tools and understanding genetic information in crop systems, particularly cotton. Bioinformatic analysis will use next-generation sequencing for identification of novel QTL and candidate gene loci and to understand population structures of breeding populations. Validation of novel QTL and candidate gene loci will be initiated through lab activities.

Approach:
Investigator and Cooperator will work together to enhance breeding tools and references for animal and crop systems to address the objective above: 1. Develop and utilize next-generation sequencing platforms to investigate biologically relevant questions. 2. Develop or use genotyping based platform for cost-effective genotyping. 3. Perform bioinformatic analyses to investigate population structures and relevance to trait information. 4. Publication and dissemination of research products to reference journals and databases.
