Research Project: Advanced Testing of Hop Germplasm

Location: Forage Seed and Cereal Research Unit

Project Number: 2072-21000-061-002-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2020
End Date: Oct 31, 2024

Objective:
Develop new hop germplasm with resistance to powdery and downy mildew.

Approach:
Experimental germplasm will be provided for distribution to commercial hop growers. The lines will be planted in large scale blocks and managed under commercial conditions. Lines will be evaluated for: yield/vigor; susceptibility to powdery mildew, aphids and spider mites when they occur; bittering acid composition; storage-ability; and essential oil composition. Experimental lines will be harvested and used for pilot brewing. Germplasm will be provided for greenhouse pre-screening and a “pot-in-pot” low trellis field for sex, powdery and downy mildew resistance/tolerance and vigor. Data will be used for selection of clones for advancement into field experiments.
