Research Project: Characterization of Water Quality and Quantity in Greenhouse and Nursery Waters in the Piedmont Ecoregion of the USA

Location: Application Technology Research

Project Number: 5082-21000-001-031-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2020
End Date: Feb 29, 2024

Objective:
The objectives of this project are to: (1) Delineate each micro-shed / collection area. Install temporary water volume & quality monitoring stations at strategic points in micro-sheds at a nursery or greenhouse in the Piedmont Ecoregion. (2) Record water quality at each monitoring station for at least two production seasons. (3) Integrate water quality data from Piedmont Ecoregions with data from other Ecoregions (i.e., Ohio) where possible.

Approach:
Water monitoring station: We will install temporary monitoring stations at one or more anonymous, regionally representative horticultural facilities (at minimum one nursery watershed and one greenhouse watershed) in the Piedmont Ecoregion. Each temporary monitoring station will consist of a flow gauge installed into the irrigation system, sonde (underwater probe with sensors installed that measure selected water quality parameters), rain gauge(s), and a sequential portable sampler (programmable sampling intervals and timing). A flume or weir with stilling well will also be installed in a known watershed area at each sampling location and continues water flow and depth information recorded.
