Research Project: Greenhouse Lighting and Systems Engineering

Location: Application Technology Research

Project Number: 5082-21000-001-038-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jan 1, 2021
End Date: Jan 1, 2026

Objective:
1) Develop and simulate trajectory control algorithm for CO2/Daily Light Integral (DLI) control in greenhouse environment 2) Develop predictive algorithm for ventilation cycles in greenhouse based on indoor/outdoor conditions 3) Simulate commercial greenhouse models in various climates in US using ARS’ Virtual Grower program 4) Simulate semi-closed greenhouse models using Virtual Grower

Approach:
Previous work on trajectory control algorithms for DLI (light and shade) in greenhouses will be extended to include simultaneous CO2, light and shade control. A key component of this is prediction of ventilation cycles, in order to avoid supplementing CO2 when loss rates will be high due to ventilation. Previous work by ARS on this problem will be extended to incorporate enthalpy measurements in prediction algorithms. Upgrades will be made to Virtual Grower to facilitate simulations of commercial and semi-closed greenhouse models in various climates in U.S.
