Research Project: Breeding Corn to Enable Organic Seed Production - Iowa

Location: Corn Insects and Crop Genetics Research

Project Number: 5030-21000-073-018-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Mar 15, 2021
End Date: Jul 31, 2024

Objective:
Our objective is to develop a rapid cycling breeding program to produce maize varieties that are suited to organic seed production.

Approach:
We will use a novel, chemical-free method to produce doubled haploids which will be genotyped. Superior plants will be identified by genomic selection and recombined to complete the cycle. A single seed NIR approach will be developed to identify doubled haploids.
