Research Project: Developing Triploid Forms of Maples to Breed for Reduced Invasiveness

Location: National Clonal Germplasm Repository

Project Number: 2072-21000-059-027-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: Sep 1, 2021
End Date: Oct 31, 2024

Objective:
The objective is evaluation of advanced selections of Norway maple, Amur maple, and Trident maple.

Approach:
Prior research in the program has improved rooting of Norway maple from approximately 15% when we began to nearly 70%. However, those studies optimized propagation of different genotypes prior to availability of sufficient triploid material. We will evaluate those protocols on our selections to start. Other species (Amur and trident maples) are easier to root but data will be collected on any selections that appear to be outliers – either with improved or inferior rooting. The next step is to evaluate production timing of these selections from cuttings. Again, this is less of an issue on Amur maple, as they commonly are propagated from cuttings, but Norway maple has always been chip budded onto seedling rootstocks. Part of the attraction for growers is its fast growth in production, thus we must confirm that our triploid selections will finish on a reasonable schedule using a new method of propagation.
