Research Project: A Systems Approach for Managing Bacterial Blight of Carrot

Location: Horticultural Crops Disease and Pest Management Research Unit

Project Number: 2072-22000-045-016-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2020
End Date: Aug 31, 2024

Objective:
Model bacterial blight aerobiology and epidemiology.

Approach:
Conduct field experiments to examine which particles Xanthomonas hortorum pv. carotae is carried on and examine how agricultural practices impact particle development. Various spores traps will be deployed around carrot fields that either capture particles into specific size categories or onto medium suitable for culturing or DNA extraction. Perform particle release experiments using the custom xbee impaction trap array and sonic release mechanism for fluorescent microspheres. Release and enumerate microspheres released under various conditions. Furnish and maintain an eddy covariance tower.
