Location: Soil Management Research

Project Number: 5060-11610-004-003-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 12, 2021
End Date: Dec 1, 2023

Objective:
Evaluate soil health parameters of selected Upper Midwest sites and provide feedback to land owners with regard to methods, means and in-field analysis of soil health practices, with the goal of enhancing adoption of carbon sequestering management practices for the Upper Midwest.

Approach:
ARS will provide in-field sampling assistance and limited assessment of hydrological characteristics, penetrometer measurements, and selected microbial parameters; virtual and in-person consultations regarding landscape processes and parameters; follow-up consultations to facilitate understanding of soil health reports provided by commercial laboratories, and obtain feedback from participants on utility of commercial lab processes and available indicators. The Cooperator will provide recruitment of participatory landowners; commercial laboratory analyses; workshops, virtual learning and engagement, and scheduling thereof; facilitation of landowner feedback of/on efforts; and research into landscape use history.
