Research Project: Improving, Evaluating and Extending High Resolution Cropland Carbon Monitoring System (CCMS)

Location: Hydrology and Remote Sensing Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-13610-030-036-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Apr 28, 2021
End Date: Apr 30, 2024

Objective:
This proposal will perform improve nitrogen and N2O flux modeling which currently incorporates soil moisture model estimates by incorporating remotely sensed soil moisture estimates. University of Maryland will be leading the effort as experts in modeling of nitrogen and N2O flux. ARS brings expertise in soil moisture monitoring and validation of soil moisture remote sensing.

Approach:
The first step in this study is to review and evaluate the current state of carbon modeling using current soil moisture estimates along with tillage estimation. Then remotely sensed products will be introduced into the workflow for the model and evaluations of the performance will be made. University of Maryland will be leading the analysis and model development. ARS will be providing consultation on soil moisture monitoring and evaluation in agricultural systems.
