Research Project: Tools for the Identification and Detection of Graminicolous Downy Mildews, Including the Select Agent Peronosclerospora Philippinensis

Location: Foreign Disease-Weed Science Research

Project Number: 8044-22000-052-004-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Aug 15, 2021
End Date: Aug 14, 2023

Objective:
The primary purpose of this agreement is to support research on downy mildews infecting graminicolous hosts with an emphasis on the select agent Peronosclerospora philippinensis. Presently there is limited sequence data and image resources available to facilitate accurate species identification of graminicolous downy mildews. In this project we will establish a robust database of resources for taxonomic clarification of graminicolous downy mildews, provide accurate identification resources, and development of diagnostic DNA barcode data for the rapid detection of these high-risk pathogens.

Approach:
The project team will: 1) Perform digital imaging and DNA barcoding of graminicolous downy mildews, and 2) develop a new IDtools website and pathogen Fact Sheets for graminicolous downy mildews.
