Research Project: Fusarium Head Blight Resistance Breeding at MSU

Location: Crop Production and Protection

Project Number: 0500-00053-005-135-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 1, 2022
End Date: Apr 30, 2026

Objective:
Objectives include: 1) Develop 600 soft red and white wheat breeding populations per year focused on Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) resistance; 2) Advance F4-derived lines to replicated testing using genomic selection for grain yield and FHB resistance; and 3) Phenotype over 1,200 wheat lines for grain yield and FHB resistance.

Approach:
Two crossing cycles per year and the ‘minibulk’ system will be used to develop 600 F4 populations. Between 1,900 to 2,850 inbred lines will be SNP-genotyped each year and genomic selection will be implemented to advance lines with high predicted grain yield and low DON levels to replicated testing.
