Research Project: NextGenEEF: Evaluation and Testing of Biodegradable Enhanced Efficiency Fertilizers

Location: Soil Management and Sugarbeet Research

Project Number: 3012-12210-001-008-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2021
End Date: Aug 31, 2025

Objective:
Assessment of the effects of NextGenEEF in the laboratory, growth chamber, greenhouse and/or field. Using nitrogen tools to assess the effects of NextGenEEF as best management practices on nitrate leaching and residual soil nitrate, and the potential of using different sources of nitrogen fertilizer or best management practices to protect groundwater quality.

Approach:
There is a need to develop next-generation enhanced efficiency fertilizers (NextGenEEF) to increase the efficiency of nitrogen fertilizers and reduce the environmental impacts of nitrogen across the USA. This project will support the development and testing of NextGenEEF and the development of methods to assess plant physiological responses to enhanced use efficiency fertilizers. These funds would be used to conduct greenhouse and field studies in cooperation with Cooperator related to water quality, nitrogen management, nitrogen use efficiencies and reduction of losses of reactive nitrogen to the environment. The following are a few selected anticipated outcomes from this joint project: -Development of new biodegradable NextGenEEF formulations. -Assessment of the effects of NextGenEEF in the greenhouse and/or field on corn yields and soil health. -Use of nitrogen tools to assess the effects of NextGenEEF on nitrate leaching and residual soil nitrate to protect groundwater quality.
