Research Project: Improved Process-based Models for Predicting Nitrous Oxide Emissions from Fertilized Soils

Location: Soil and Water Management Research

Project Number: 5062-11120-001-028-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2021
End Date: Aug 31, 2024

Objective:
Develop improved models that predict soil nitrous oxide emissions following application of nitrogen fertilizer and nitrification inhibitors

Approach:
Cooperator will integrate algorithms describing nitrification and nitrous oxide emissions developed by the ARS investigator into a larger ecosystem model. This larger ecosystem model includes a broader range of processes than limiting focus on specific parts of the soil Nitrogen cycle. The model predictions will be compared to multiple data sets collected by the cooperator and the ARS investigator where nitrous oxide emissions will be measured from fertilized soil used for corn production both with and without the application of nitrification inhibitors. Models with varying levels of complexity will be developed and tested to determine the optimum level of complexity that maximizes predictability and ease of use.
