Research Project: Remote Detection and Functional Assessments for Wetlands in the Mid-Atlantic Region

Location: Hydrology and Remote Sensing Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-13610-030-031-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2021
End Date: Aug 31, 2023

Objective:
The objective of this research project is to investigate whether prior-converted (PC) wetlands on agricultural lands that are targeted for restoration can be assessed accurately and efficiently using remote- sensing imagery/GIS and rapid field methods.

Approach:
1. Compile remote-sensing and geospatial data layers for target watersheds. 2. Incorporate data from previous pilot study from a subset of prior-converted wetlands and restored wetland with an existing database of intensive data on natural reference wetlands as well as rapid assessment data (SWR) on an additional group of sites across the Mid-Atlantic. 3. Ensure that all data is represented in a searchable database for use by USDA. 4. Construct and document approach to identifying remote-sensing metrics as potential proxies for field- based measurement. 5. Test remote-sensing proxies with field-derived data at the scales of both individual variables and functional assessment. 6. Construct new functional assessment models utilizing remote sensing data, and indicating where that may be best served by other methods (e.g., INVEST) or cannot be adequately assessed via remote methods.
