Research Project: Improving Nursery Irrigation through Coupled Advances in Substrate Composition and Cyclic Irrigation Scheduling

Location: Application Technology Research

Project Number: 5082-21000-001-043-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2021
End Date: Jul 31, 2025

Objective:
Characterize water movement and leaching characteristics from coir-amended pine bark.

Approach:
Cooperator team will examine the rate of coir and sphagnum peat as an amendment to nursery container substrate, by examining the influence of fiber type and rate on wetting front and hydrology (i.e. water retention characteristics) in order to inform its use in crops subjected to a cyclic irrigation schedule. Coir or peat will be compared to a traditional 100% pine bark-based substrate (0% coir) for a total of 3 substrates.
