Research Project: DNA Sequencing and Molecular Analysis of Forage, Range, and Turf Plants

Location: Forage and Range Research

Project Number: 2080-21500-002-009-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 15, 2021
End Date: Sep 14, 2025

Objective:
Determine genetic diversity and genetic identity of plant populations; identify functionally important plant genes; and predict the breeding value of individual plants used for livestock forage, rangeland re-vegetation, turf, and other agricultural or conservation purposes.

Approach:
The cooperator will determine the relative mobility or size of DNA fragments from plants by capillary electrophoresis or related methods of molecular analysis. The cooperator will use highly-parallelized next-generation DNA sequencing techniques to determine short DNA sequence reads, approximately 75 to 300 bp in total length, from complex plant DNA libraries containing millions of potentially unique sequences from hundreds of plants.
