Research Project: Developing Native and Induce Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) Resistance Solutions in Wheat

Location: Crop Production and Protection

Project Number: 0500-00053-005-138-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 1, 2022
End Date: Apr 30, 2025

Objective:
Creating new breeding lines, introducing genetic diversity, line testing, scab testing, design core-shell dsRNA-chitosan for sustained release of dsRNA, integration of dsRNA into nanoparticles silencing of candidate genes using coated siRNA and assays for siRNA delivery and effects in Fg, and gene prioritization, dsRNA design, and applications on wheat.

Approach:
Project 1 uses breeding crosses, germplasm advancement, and line testing for several years and multiple locations. Project 2 uses incorporation dsRNA tools into nanostructure in order to make a slow-release solution with higher shelf-life to silence vital genes in pathogen for increased effectiveness upon spray application.
