Research Project: Machine Learning Integration into Breeding Programs

Location: Genomics and Bioinformatics Research

Project Number: 6066-21310-006-018-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2021
End Date: Aug 31, 2025

Objective:
1. Perform experiments and analyses related to development of high-throughput methods focused on utilizing machine learning tools for integrating into breeding programs. 2. Organize research projects to expand research in this field corresponding to multiple cropping systems, including but not limited to, cotton, soybean, blueberry, peanut and turf. 3. Work on development of genomics based tools within commodity groups to set the stage for future genomic selection projects.

Approach:
Investigator and Cooperator will work together to enhance breeding tools and references for crop systems to address the objective above: 1. Develop and utilize machine learning algorithms to investigate biologically relevant questions. 2. Develop machine learning algorithms that enhance connection to high-throughput phenotyping and selection. 4. Perform downstream bioinformatic analyses to investigate connection of developed tools to connect phenotype with genotypes. 5. Publication and dissemination of research products to reference journals and databases.
