Research Project: Measurement of Methane Emissions Across a Wetlands Alteration Gradient

Location: Hydrology and Remote Sensing Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-13610-030-035-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 13, 2021
End Date: Sep 30, 2023

Objective:
Methane is an important greenhouse gas produced by wetlands but the net Global Warming Potential (GWP) of wetland alteration in agroecosystems has not been measured. A collaborative effort between the University of Maryland and USDA ARS has established a methane flux network designed to assess impacts of natural, restored and drained wetlands on net GWP of agricultural landscapes. Objectives: 1. Support management and data collection associated with the methane flux tower network. 2. Coordinate exchange of data for calibration and validation of landscape models for ecosystem carbon dynamics and for net global warming potential assessments. 3. Prepare progress reports that document flux tower data outcomes.

Approach:
A collaborative effort between University of Maryland and USDA ARS has established a methane flux tower network across a wetland alteration gradient (natural, restored and drained). The agreement helps fund operation of this network to assess impacts of wetland alteration on methane emissions and net global warming potential. To contribute to the calibration and validation of the SWAT-C model, this work also facilitates sharing of datasets that are under the ownership of the cooperator or the collaborator.
