Research Project: Midwest Climate Hub Extension Liaison

Location: Soil, Water & Air Resources Research

Project Number: 5030-21600-001-004-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2021
End Date: Aug 31, 2025

Objective:
The goal is to establish a more structured relationship between ARS (Midwest Climate Hub) and regional extension entities. The Midwest Climate Hub works with state extension services around the Midwest region to help partner on providing ag-climate information and services. But connecting with the variety of partners is difficult for current climate hub staffing. The project will establish a university extension liaison to help connect the Climate Hub with various extension partners and with the regional extension group, the North Central Climate Collaborative (NC3). The goal is to help establish a more structured relationship between MCH and regional extension entities. The extension of this work will develop case studies for climate smart practices to share with the Midwest Climate Hub and regional partners.

Approach:
The project will establish an extension liaison between the ARS (Midwest Climate Hub (MCH)) and regional extension. The liaison will meet regularly with the ARS (MCH) staff to discuss current climate issues and climate adaptation/mitigation efforts to plan and develop extension-climate hub efforts across the region. The liaison will help to transition regional efforts to potentially broader projects on extension- climate adaptation and mitigation. Current climate impact (ie drought/flood, etc.) information on agriculture will be gathered and used by the ARS (MCH) and various regional partners.
