Objective:
To determine if a low salinity system can be used to raise salt-loving plants and Pacific White Shrimp in an aquaponic system.
Approach:
U.S. shrimp and catfish producers seek to improve efficiencies and expand production through the development and adaptation of new technologies. The system proposed here will incorporate low salinity water (~4 ppt). Many plants tolerate salt in the soil. The majority of these are landscape plants. Most aquaponic producers raise vegetables, but incorporating landscape plants would enable the producer to diversify his operation into an area virtually untapped by the aquaponics market. We will attempt to grow salt-loving plants such as blanket flower, daylily, lantana, thornless honey locust, and the eastern red cedar to the size that would be marketable (small rather than large).
