Research Project: Integrated Optimization Framework of California Water and Land Use

Location: Sustainable Agricultural Water Systems Research

Project Number: 2032-13220-002-012-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 30, 2021
End Date: Oct 31, 2025

Objective:
The objective of this project is to 1) develop an integrated hydro-economic programming model of agricultural water use and land use in California, accounting for potential managed aquifer recharge and regulations due to the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act, and 2) investigate data management and best practices for interdisciplinary models.

Approach:
Using optimization methodology, parameters generated from existing agro- and hydro-economic models, inputs from pertinent hydrologic, economic, agronomic, and/or climate science research, and guidance from concurrent research at the Sustainable Agricultural Water Systems unit and the Center for Watershed Sciences, an economic programming model framework will be developed that incorporates managed aquifer recharge, surface and groundwater use, crop dynamics, land use changes, and climate scenarios. This will be accomplished with optimization software including GAMS and Python. The framework will be used to assess scenarios of varying water availabilities, prices, and water management policies to inform policy makers, researchers, and stake-holders of likely outcomes.
