Location: Watershed Physical Processes Research
Project Number: 6060-13000-029-020-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Aug 31, 2021
End Date: Aug 30, 2026
Objective:
The main goal of the work is to measure erosion of an earthen embankment in an irrigation reservoir with different forms of protection: no protection, geotextiles, and floating wave barriers. A secondary goal is to improve methods for quantifying bank retreat using photogrammetric methods.
Approach:
We have an established research site at an irrigation reservoir near Shelby, Mississippi, with a weather station and wave gauges. We will continue the project by measuring bank retreat and erosion to quantify differences in erosion for levee sections protected by geotextiles and floating wave barriers. The land manager plans to rebuild the levee system in 2021-2022, which will give us an opportunity to make erosion measurements on levee slopes that have not already been degraded by erosion.
