Research Project: Scab Resistant Wheat Germplasm Adapted to GA and Southeast

Location: Crop Production and Protection

Project Number: 0500-00053-005-144-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 1, 2022
End Date: Apr 30, 2026

Objective:
Develop adapted soft red winter wheat germplasm with improved Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) resistance using classic and modern technologies including Double haploid (DH) and genomic selection which will enhance the efficiency of our coordinated breeding programs. We will produce 475 DH/ year from crosses combining multiple effective FHB resistance QTL in adapted backgrounds.

Approach:
Segregating populations crosses made between elite HRSW lines and UGA germplasm having divers’ Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) resistant sources will be evaluated and advanced to select adapted lines with improved FHB. F1 of selected crosses that combine multiple effective FHB resistance QTL in adapted backgrounds will be submitted to produce 475 new DH/year.
