Research Project: Enhanced Capacity for Cooperative Research Related to Insect Transmission of Pathogens

Location: Operations

Project Number: 3022-32000-016-005-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2021
End Date: Aug 30, 2025

Objective:
The National Bio and Agro Defense Facility (NBAF) is under construction in Manhattan, KS and upon completion will include research insect transmitted foreign animal diseases. Preparations are underway for the transition of the scientific programs to NBAF. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS) has established a new Foreign Arthropod-Borne Animal Diseases Research Unit (FABADRU). The FABADRU has established cooperative projects with the Cooperator. This work will continue at least during the transition period. Additional equipment is needed for increase capacity and to meet additional ARS assigned research needs.

Approach:
The cooperator has identified a core laboratory that will allow ARS researchers to conduct assigned research but will require some facility enhancement and additional equipment. The cooperator will acquire equipment such as percival incubators, refrigerators, freezers, 6ft Biosafety cabinet(s), two CO2 incubators, quant Studio 6, thermocyler, nanoparticle counter, CO2 tanks, Vacusafes+Vacuboys for BSCs to meet the expanded needs. This equipment is intended to establish a core arbovirology research facility to meet both ARS and the cooperator research needs as mutually agreed.
