Research Project: Development of High Yield and Disease Resistant CP Sugarcane Cultivars for Florida

Location: Sugarcane Field Station

Project Number: 6030-21000-007-038-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2021
End Date: Aug 31, 2024

Objective:
The development of new disease-resistant, high-yielding sugarcane cultivars specifically adapted for Florida.

Approach:
Cross superior sugarcane to produce "true-seed", germinate in greenhouse and transplant individual seedlings (clones) to field. Evaluate and select superior high-yielding disease-resistant sugarcane clones in multi-year trials in a tri-party cooperative program on ARS and on grower farm locations and to vegetatively increase seed cane of the seeded clones.
