Research Project: Management, Storage, and Research of National Seeds of Success Native Seed Collection

Location: Plant Germplasm Introduction and Testing Research

Project Number: 2090-21000-037-010-I
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Jan 1, 2022
End Date: Sep 30, 2025

Objective:
In collaboration with the Bureau of Land Management colleagues: - Through the BLM-led Seeds of Success program, acquire, conserve, maintain, characterize, evaluate, and distribute native plant genetic resources, and their associated information.

Approach:
There is increasing interest and need to utilize native plant germplasm for restoration after wildfires and other disturbances. Native plant germplasm also fill gaps in genetic diversity coverage in National Plant Germplasm System (NPGS) collections, in particular for native crop wild relatives. The USDA-ARS Western Regional Plant Introduction Station (WRPIS) will acquire, process, and catalogue seed collections made by the BLM Seeds of Success (SOS) project. Passport collection data will be entered into the Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN) database. Security back-up samples will be sent to the National Center for Genetic Resources Preservation (NCGRP), Ft. Collins, CO for long term storage. Seed will be distributed to public and private researchers or growers to further research and development of native plant materials for use on public and other lands or agricultural crop production. Collections will be made available and transferred to crop specific curators within the National Plant Germplasm System. Characterization, collection, and seed zone research will be completed and published for keystone restoration and agriculturally important crop species.
