Research Project: Breeding Fusarium Head Blight (FHB)-resistant winter wheat for Texas and the Southern U.S.

Location: Crop Production and Protection

Project Number: 0500-00053-005-098-G
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 1, 2022
End Date: Apr 30, 2026

Objective:
Our main objective is to use traditional breeding, doubled-haploids (DH’s), misted-nurseries, and markerassisted selection to develop Fusarium Head Blight (FHB)-resistant hard red winter wheat (HRWW) and soft red winter wheat (SRWW) cultivars possessing multiple FHB resistance genes/QTL in climate-resilient, high-yielding, and good quality background, and to share germplasm with Southern U.S. programs.

Approach:
We will combine resistance (indigenous, Fhb1, Fhb6) with other traits conferring tolerance to other biotic and abiotic stresses, high grain yield and quality, and test in mist-irrigated nurseries and field environments. We will evaluate our advanced trials and regional nurseries for disease incidence, severity, scabby kernels, and DON content.
