Research Project: Improving Pennycress and Winter Camelina as Cash Cover Crops

Location: Soil Management Research

Project Number: 5060-21220-007-005-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jan 1, 2022
End Date: Dec 31, 2026

Objective:
ARS and Cooperator will develop improved management practices by (a) evaluating winter oilseed planting dates and establishment methods across a range of cropping systems, and (b) identifying new genotypes of winter oilseeds that increase oilseed and cash crop yields.

Approach:
Row spacing configurations will be evaluated for relay-cropping soybean in winter camelina and pennycress. Relay- cropping productivity will be evaluated using selected soybean cultivars identified as being better suited for relaying with winter oilseeds. Growth cycle and productivity of 10 to 15 accessions of winter oilseeds exhibiting various targeted traits including early maturity, freeze hardiness, and low seed shatter will be evaluated. All field experiments will be repeated at least two growing seasons.
